Strengths:
+ Gets its first power spike at level 4 instead of level 5 unlike the rest of the speedsters, allowing you to pressure lane more effectively should you choose to go lane or go for a level 4 gank.
+ Solar Blade is absolutely massive burst damage that has its own means of CD reduction that can sometimes enable Leafeon to get off two Solar Blades in a short amount of time.
+ Solar Blade has great range that enables a more ranged attacker-esque playstyle that can easily flex into an assassination as needed. Combine that with the huge burst damage and you got a move that can be a very strong way of secure bullying lanes.
+ Razor Leaf is also no slouch for burst damage at closer ranges, and the recast gives you a unique means of putting on more burst damage while still moving around.
+ Decent early game options. Swift is decent secure and quick attack gives you some mobility to help you stack effectively.
+ Very short ult cooldown which does good burst damage. It is sure hit and unstoppable, great for diving and blowing up a squishy backliner or punishing enemies that are hard grouped up. Eevee leveling curve also gives you this powerful tool at level 8.
Weaknesses:
– Squishy with little to show for in terms of self sustain options.
– No hard CC on any moves and not much to show for sustain either other than hitting all of Razor Leaf for a shield. This exacerbates Leafeon’s frailty.
– Struggles against tankier setups without having a level lead.
Build + Gameplay
MOVESET 1: Razor Ace – Razor Leaf + Aerial Ace
Items: Attack Weight, Razor Claw, Energy Amp
– Attack Weight is probably your best item for pure, raw damage burst damage due to Leafeon’s gameflow not being very conducive to Weakness Policy. You get fairly respectable ratios if you hit your moves good and great ratios on your Unite Move. Stacks aren’t super necessary to be functional though, so no sweat if you’re not able to get any.
– Leafeon will often weave in auto attacks with how it plays and both Razor Leaf and Aerial Ace having multiple casts, which gives pretty great Razor Claw all around for maximizing your burst damage.
– Energy Amp is a nuts item on this character. Leafeon’s fast 100s CD ult, high damage, and short duration that lets you get some amp boosted moves afterwards gives this item insane synergy with it. Ult way more and harder. Very good! Battle Item: Eject Button or Full Heal
– Eject Button is great for general mobility and outplays to help you escape dicey situations or get into surprising positions for your Unite Move or getting juicy Razor Leaf recasts.
– Full Heal is nice into higher CC comps for making sure that you don’t get shut down by stuns as a frail character that relies on mobility. Emblems: 6 Brown 6 White– Flat Atk Focus
– Best overall emblem set for getting a good balance of extra damage and bulk.
Moveset 2: Solar Blade + Leaf Blade
Roles: Jungler, Laner Items: Attack Weight , Energy Amp , Charging Charm/Float Stone /
– Attack Weight is probably your best item for pure, raw damage burst damage due to Leafeon’s gameflow not being very conducive to Weakness Policy. Solar Blade has crazy ratios that loves having Weight stacks. Stacks aren’t super necessary to be functional though, so no sweat if you’re not able to get any.
– Energy Amp is a nuts item on this character. Leafeon’s very fast 100s CD ult, high damage, and short duration that lets you get some amp boosted moves afterwards gives this item insane synergy with it. Ult way more and harder. Very good!
– Charging Charm and Float Stone are both great options for this set as Charm increases the burst ability of the set to benefit both assassination windows as well as secure thresholds, while Float Stone provides a nice amount of flat attack for Solar Blade’s massive scaling and the extra movement speed can be helpful for lining up a Solar Blade before a fight starts. Battle Item: Eject Button or Full Heal
– Eject Button is great for general mobility and outplays to help you escape dicey situations. It can also be casted during Solar Blade giving you a big positioning change to help land Solar Blade or extend its range.
– Full Heal is nice into higher CC comps for making sure that you don’t get shut down by stuns. Your Solar Blade charge can still be interrupted by CC, so this is a nice layer of safety to have if you don’t find yourself needing eject. Emblems: 6 Brown6 White– Flat Atk Focus
– Best overall emblem set for getting a good balance of extra damage and bulk.
About Chlorophyll :
Chlorophyll will charge while outside of tall grass (9 seconds to fill to max this way) or upon hitting the edge of Leaf Blade. When the Chlorophyll gauge is full, your move speed is increased, and your next basic attack will be a boosted attack that does nice damage and a slow with gapclose properties, or a max charged solar blade. Being inside of tall grass will not charge the chlorophyll gauge but you will not lose any charge you have gain previously while being inside tall grass. You are as fast as Dodrio with a full Chlorophyll gauge so try to keep it around for as much as you can for general map movement before spending it. If you’re on the Razor Leaf + Leaf Blade set, you can often clear some farm without even having to use an auto attack so you can keep your Chlorophyll.
The chlorophyll meter is a little visually deceptive, since there’s a moment where it might appear fully filled up at first glance but is actually just shy of it. Wait for the more clear visual indicator of the speed boost and the circle appearing around Leafeon that indicates the range of chlorophyll boosted auto.
About Emerald Two Step :
This is quite the Unite move, especially since Leafeon learns it earlier at level 8. It’s a sure hit dash that makes you unstoppable and dash at the target you lock on to. That dash does some damage, then Leafeon jumps up and slams the ground in a big green AoE explosion for more damage. There are 3 hitboxes to this. The one in the center does the most damage, the middle one does a good amount, and the outer ring does little compared to the other two.
Using this ult as a combo tool in tandem with Energy Amp is also very important for maximizing its value. Make sure that you have a full Cholorphyll meter after you finish using Emerald Two Step so you can get off an immediate Amp boosted Solar Blade or Razor Leaf that does nuclear damage. If you’re playing Razor Leaf, you can also recast Razor Leaf during Emerald Two Step’s animation, which can lead to some absolutely massive damage and an easy recast hit while you’re pouncing on your target.
The damage numbers on this Unite move are very high and the cooldown is very low at a fast 100s. With Energy Amp, you can farm back another one within 60-70 seconds depending on how much farm is on the map. Don’t be afraid to ego ult to get yourself out of a tight spot in the early to mid game, though I wouldn’t advise being in a precarious spot like that where you have to Unite to bail yourself out so you can use it at a better time. That being said though, if you’re able to farm hard after doing that you can probably have it up again for said better time anyway.
This move has no CC component to it and there’s a delay between Leafeon’s initial hit and the AoE explosion centered on where Leafeon crashes down. This means that players that have a ton of speed boosts or dash on hand can avoid the brunt of the AoE damage or avoid it entirely if they react quickly. Especially against more mobile targets, try to use this move after they’ve expended their mobility options to ensure you get the big damage and easy pickings. Using your own Eject Button during the midair portion of the second hit is also possible to react to the target ejecting away as well, to ensure the middle damage is dealt. You can also try to to take advantage of the 30% slows on Leaf Blade’s sweetspot and Chlorophyll boosted auto to help you land this.
You can also still die before the AoE goes off as the Unite charge gets consumed once the initial pounce hits. When this happens, you won’t be getting any sort of refund.
If it ends up being the case that you don’t need to ult to get your pick, here are some other good use cases or applications that can either help you get even more kills or get more out of your first pick.
– Gapclosing and killing your next target after the first. Helpful for if you need to need to get there fast but don’t have your other options ready yet. If Razor Leaf hasn’t been recasted yet, you can still recast Razor Leaf while you’re using this move and potentially get a juicy Amp boosted Razor Leaf into your target. A gapclose is also still a gapclose and sometimes you may need to do it as another dash of sorts.
– Whether it be your first target or something else, you can still Unite to leveraging the move’s high damage AoE to punish people that group up too hard. This often won’t do much on its own against bulkier targets and/or a lot of shielding is up though, so don’t be too trigger happy.
– Preemptively using it to take advantage of the unstoppable the move has to bruteforce your way through potential CC.
Solar Blade or Razor Leaf?
vs.
While Solar Blade is currently the often favored move in this current meta, Razor Leaf is still strong and has its own place. Solar Blade’s charging time and inability to adjust the aiming once charging makes it dicey into more mobile enemies that can easily move around this restriction, which makes Razor Leaf a generally much more flexible move to fight with against very mobile enemies in exchange for being less effective at a distance.
If you are laning, Solar Blade will pretty much always be the preferred pick. Its huge range and damage being accessed with a level 4 spike makes it extremely good at bullying lanes by just outsecuring and chunking out enemy laners on repeat even at lower charges.
Razor Leaf is also a bit more favorable to more dive focused playstyles as a jungler due to the recast giving an extra layer of flexibility in being able to deal some more damage as you run or reposition after the initial dive in, and the shield is also helpful for surviving longer if you manage to get it.
Level 4 Leafeon Jungle Plays!
If you want to play for the possibility of a very fast level 4 gank if you’re jungling, finish off your Xatu after the 9:45 mark. This should give you an extra bit of catchup EXP that lets you reach level 4 immediately after clearing your first buff. Very helpful knowledge in general for faster jungle clears that involve a level 4 spike. Another possible play to do with this information is after getting your 4 spike from doing this, you run straight to the enemy jungle. If the enemy jungler didn’t do an immediate and quick clear on the buffs, you can safely and easily go for a steal on one of the buffs and deprive the enemy jungler of their 5 spike in doing so, especially with Solar Blade’s huge range and burst damage.
Moveset 1 - Best
Although this isn’t exactly a dev intended moveset combination, it has quickly shown itself to be a very effective moveset.
Above all, you’re an diving assassin on this build. Play like one. This means patience in waiting out resources and picking the right spots and targets.
Jungle is generally a good way to go with this character as it fast tracks you to snowballing potential while still having the option to surprise people with a level 4 gank. Leafeon’s laning is still fine and good though, so you’re by no means griefing playing the character in lane, but you’d be better off playing Solar Blade if you’re laning.
Razor Leaf is your move learned at level 4. It shoots 5 leaves in a shotgun style fan out onto the ground and deals damage, then can be retracted back to you to make them hurt things again. Landing all 5 leaves up close is quite a bit of upfront burst damage so you generally want to try to be up close when you use this move to start tapping into Leafeon’s burst potential.
Your Razor Leaf cooldown doesn’t start until your leaves retract as well. Keep in mind that the retracted leaves also do bonus damage after one second of being out and can be retracted while you’re using your Unite and other moves, which are other factors to consider. A common play is taking out one target without casting the retract, then retracting them as you move onto your next target to hit them with it as well without having to wait through its usual cooldown. Using your gapclosing options like boosted auto, Leaf Blade, Unite move, and Eject Button will help facilitate these kinds of plays.
A combo without Unite move in the picture will generally be doing some combination of Leaf Blade + Chlorophyll boosted auto into Razor Leaf. Leading with the Chlorophyll boosted auto or going in with Leaf Blade when your meter is almost full in is technically the most meter efficient since you don’t waste Leaf Blade’s meter gain properties on an already full bar, but the sheer length of Leaf Blade’s dash and group damage will often make you end up leading with it. Regardless of the route you take, this alone should be enough to severely maim or kill most squishes if you aren’t struggling on levels. That means you often don’t even have to Unite move to get your pick if you play your cards right.
Unite move is still a pretty big part of Leafeon’s kit though, as it’s still a point and click dash into AoE nuke. In terms of synergy with Razor Leaf, you can recast Razor Leaf during Emerald Two Step’s animation, letting you be able to get off a huge recast hit while ulting to help you blow up a bulkier target or put some great damage on everything your leaves pass through.
Keep in mind that Leaf Blade and Chlorophyll auto comes with a 30% slow as well, which at times can be helpful for slowing down faster targets like a certain Dodo bird.
Razor Leaf Retract Geometry
The leaf retracting is also a big part of this move that can let you make some plays that range from really clever retracts for big damage after taking one guy out or doing a very simple immediate retract to tack on an extra bit of damage. Hitting all 5 leaves on either cast gives you a small shield. While it’s not massive, it can definitely help you survive more at times.
Because the leaves are put out in a fan shape, the formation the leaves retract in will also vary depending on your positioning relative to your leaves when you retract them. Take a look at this low quality diagarm that visualizes what I mean.
If you were to throw out Razor Leaf right in front of you, then retract the leaves while staying where you threw it out, they would retract in a formation like this where you need to be in your opponent’s face to get all 5 leaves to hit. Pretty obvious, but here’s where you can get fancy:
If you happen to be in this sort of position relative to your leaves, retracting them will make them stay in a line the entire way back. This means that if you’re precise, you can hit someone with all 5 retracting leaves from a much further distance away since all the leaves get more focused into a line formation.
A fun but very commital play you can do is dashing or ejecting behind a target while Razor Leaf is out, then retracting it as you do that so all the leaves go through whoever you just did that to.
About Aerial Ace :
This is the move that the devs intended to be used more with Razor Leaf. Its main defining trait is trading out Leaf Blade’s one huge high damage dash for two lower damage and smaller dashes to help facilitate Razor Leaf positioning. While this move has higher damage potential overall than Leaf Blade if you land both Aerial Ace + boosted autos, the issue is that because the dashes are really short, you’ll often have a harder time actually getting close enough to your targets to be able to do that efficiently. However, with the recent buffs to its cooldowns, Aerial Ace is now quite spammable for general tricky movement and moving around the map faster, which makes it suitable to a more hit and run style of play while throwing out Razor Leaf. Good for being slippery and dueling in some matchups, as well as keeping up with hyper mobile carries on the enemy side.
Moveset 2
Solar Blade’s charge time and long range essentially makes this character function closer to that of a ranged attacker that can occasionally go in to assassinate someone with Unite move + Solar Blade. Even at no charge, Solar Blade provides some pretty notable burst damage that makes it a great option for securing objectives and farm. This makes the move attractive as lane bully’s option, although Razor Leaf still provides very good secure for that point of the game.
Your general gameplan with this set is to stay behind your frontliners and bonk people in the head with Solar Blade.
The character really starts coming to life once you hit your level 6 spike and get Leaf Blade , which is a massive improvement to your burst damage and dash distance to give you not only better fighting, but also makes you a very potent second rotation jungle invader if you’re able to get 6 off your first gank or after grabbing some center Baltoys after the gank. Leaf Blade is also very fast at filling your Chlorophyll meter but unless you’re hitting multiple targets, will only fill a bit less than half of it if you’re hitting only one guy. If you need your Chlorophyll immediately after casting Leaf Blade, be sure to keep your already gained meter and/or hitting multiple targets in mind.
Leaf Blade should be used sparingly for general evasive movement or sometimes building up Chlorophyll meter faster to speed up your cooldowns. When your Chlorophyll meter fills up to full, Solar Blade has 50% of its cooldown knocked off and casts at full power instantly. Using Solar Blade at full charge also shaves off 50% of its cooldown as well. If your Chlorophyll meter is almost full, you can easily do a Leaf Blade > full charge Solar Blade combo.
While situational, this means that if you hit a full charge Solar Blade when your Chlorophyll meter is about to finish filling naturally or after a followup Leaf Blade, you can get both instances of a 50% second CD reduction at pretty much the same time for what’s pretty much a full CD reset. Double Solar Blade!
If/when a key target is exposed and it’s safe to do so, blow em up with Leaf Blade > Full Chlorophyll Solar Blade and throw an ult in there as neeeded. If Emerald Two Step is in the equation, then be sure to have a full Chlorophyll meter ready so you can immediately drop a powerful Amp boosted Solar Blade after the ult.
A big downside to this move is the fact that you cannot adjust where the Solar Blade is aiming towards once you start charging it, so some prediction work and smart positioning is needed to hit more slippery opponents.
