Strengths
+ Excellent early game dueling and secure power with Iron Defense boosted autos
+ Incredible sustain with very high uptime shields from Gyro Ball on a low cooldown
+ Great burst potential with chaining your gapcloser with Meteor Mash
+ Excellent mobility both around the map and within fights with Magnet Rise
+ Gains more value from his moves when they hit multiple targets, greatly rewards teamfight participation
Weaknesses
– Relatively squishy in Beldum phase when Iron Defense is down
– Rather low base stats across the board until fully evolved, at which point he gets excellent base stats
– Can be prone to being kited if his one mobility tool is baited out/used elsewhere
– Very lackluster Unite move that is easily interrupted, can get cancelled by walls, and even when it does work gives you very little control over where it takes you
Build + Gameplay
Attack Weight : Now that Metagross’ ratio’s are all through the roof, and Iron Defense actually provides reliable secure in lane, stacking with Weight actually has feasible use and great returns. With a full Meteor Mash doing 545% ratio worth of damage and Gyro Ball providing 468% ratio shields if 2 players are hit on such a low cooldown, it’s easy to see why Weight has huge value no matter what route you take for this moveslot.
Weakness Policy :
The bulky brawler’s item once again finds itself right at home with a very capable bulky brawler. With the amount of shielding Metagross generates, he’s more than capable of getting AND keeping this item fully stacked up indefinitely. This can either be a replacement for Weight if you are not a fan of stacking, or be used in tandem WITH Weight for even greater Attack stat returns for the fattest burst and shields. Combine that with a bit of flat HP on top, and this is an excellent filler item anywhere on his build.
Muscle Band :
With boosted autos lowering the cooldowns of the move 1 slot, increasing attack speed has great effect both on damage output and survivability, especially early game. In your natural playflow you general tend to fill time in between cooldowns with auto attacking anyway, so you also get good mileage from the passive damage proc as well.
Razor Claw :
This item can be used in two different ways depending what move you’ve chosen first. On Gyro Ball builds, you just naturally will generate a ton of Razor procs, considering Gyro Ball is on a 4 sec natural cooldown, which is realistically even lower due to boosted autos. The constant procs help contribute to whittling things down, as well as the slow helping you stick to the target for repeated Gyro spins over time.
On Mash builds, it naturally fits in with how the move works since it’s a dual-part move. First use generates the shield, and will prime your Razor proc, and the ensuing big punch will have the proc damage on top of the Mash damage, augmenting your burst even further. Can help delete some squishies even more.
**Gyro Ball sets prefer a more offensive-oriented build, due to how your attack stat is translated into a defensive stat with proper shielding play.**
Honorable Mention – Resonant Guard (Mash Only): What would a huge shield generating juggernaut love to have? Yes, even more shields. The overall sustain of Resonant Guard slots perfectly in Metagross style of play, and that shield stacks neatly with shields generated by Mash. Perfect fit for bulk monsters who favor longevity and extended engagements.
This item fits Mash only due to how Mash+ version’s heal scaling on max HP.
Honorable Mention – Aeos Cookie (Mash Only):
This is a great overall defensive bulk item that particularly synergizes well with Meteor Mash, which has a + upgrade that gives Metagross a heal based on % max HP. Since you’re already stacking in lane as it is with Weight, you can get pretty great value out of this at the same time that also helps with patching yourself back up.
This item fits Mash only due to how Mash+ version’s heal scaling on max HP.
